Mute people, stop video, promote presenters, remove attendees from the event, pin or delete chat, block chat, use slow mode, and admit people from a webinar waiting room when it is enabled — in Bevy Virtual Meetup, Bevy Virtual Conference, and webinar rooms.
Hosts and moderators use these tools during a live Bevy Virtual room to keep the session safe and on track. The same Participants and chat controls appear in Bevy Virtual Meetup, Bevy Virtual Conference (sessions, Stages, and Backstage), and webinar rooms on either product. Open Participants in the tray for people controls, and use session chat for message and slow-mode controls.
Day-of join, promote-to-moderator, Stage Backstage, and end-for-all steps stay in the product host articles: Use Bevy Virtual Meetup as a host/moderator and Use Bevy Virtual Conference as a host/moderator.
| Tool | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Mute / stop video for a group | Participants → filter tab (All, Presenters, or Staff) | Turns off microphone or camera for everyone in that filter who currently has it on. You cannot remotely turn mic or camera back on. |
| Presenter mode | Participants → Actions | Gives someone microphone, camera, and screen share. They do not need to raise a hand first. |
| Remove from event | Participants → Actions | Bans them from this event and ejects them from the call immediately. |
| Delete message | Chat → message menu | Removes that message from the room chat. |
| Pin / Unpin | Chat → message menu | Keeps a message at the top of session chat. Pinning another message replaces the current pin. |
| Block chat / Unblock chat | Chat message menu or Participants → Actions | Stops (or restores) that person’s ability to send chat for the rest of this event. |
| Slow mode | Chat → Slow mode settings | Limits how often attendees can send chat messages. |
| Waiting room admit | Tray → Waiting room (webinar rooms when enabled) | Admit one person, everyone waiting, or turn on Let everyone in. |
Note: Hosts and moderators share these in-call tools. Moderators are promoted during the session and do not get chapter or admin dashboard access from Moderator mode alone. Meetup: Host vs. Moderator mode in Bevy Virtual Meetup and About Bevy Virtual Meetup roles. Conference: Roles and permissions in Bevy Virtual Conference.
Who can use these tools
- Hosts — people who join with host permission (typically a chapter team or HQ role that includes host permission).
- Moderators — registered attendees promoted with Moderator mode during the session.
Only hosts and moderators see the full Participants admin controls. To promote someone to moderator, see Use Bevy Virtual Meetup as a host/moderator or Use Bevy Virtual Conference as a host/moderator.
Mute people or stop their video
From the Participants panel, you can mute or stop video for everyone in the active filter who currently has a microphone or camera on.
- Open Participants in the tray.
- Choose a filter tab if needed: All, Presenters, or Staff.
- At the top of the list, select the control to mute everyone in that filter, or the control to stop video for everyone in that filter.
You can also mute or stop video for one person from their row when those controls are available. People see that a moderator turned the device off.
Important: For security, hosts and moderators cannot remotely turn someone’s microphone or camera back on. The person must unmute or enable video themselves after you stop it.
Note for Bevy Virtual Conference Stages: In an on-stage Session — including when speakers use Backstage before or during broadcast — speaker microphone and camera are managed with Presenter mode and Backstage broadcast controls, not the same bulk mute / stop-video path as an off-stage Session. Off-stage Sessions use the Participants mute and stop-video controls described above. Backstage steps: About backstage in Bevy Virtual Conference.
Promote someone to presenter
Give Presenter mode to anyone who needs to speak, show video, or share their screen. They do not need to raise a hand or send a presenter request first.
- Open Participants in the tray.
- Open Actions for the person.
- Turn on Presenter mode.
- They may need to accept presenter access and allow camera and microphone in the browser.
- When they finish, turn Presenter mode off so they leave the video grid (or stage, in a webinar or Conference Stage).
- Raise Hand and presenter requests still work when someone asks to speak — they are optional.
- In Conference, Presenter mode applies to the current room and might need to be granted again after someone rejoins.
Note for webinar rooms: The audience is hidden. Open Participants for that audience (separate from Presenters), then turn on Presenter mode. Full webinar steps: Promote or remove webinar attendees. For what webinar mode is, see About Bevy webinar mode. Meetup presenter-side tips: Use Bevy Virtual Meetup as a presenter.
Remove someone from the event
- Open Participants in the tray.
- Open Actions for the person.
- Select Remove from event.
- Confirm in the dialog.
They leave the call immediately — they do not stay until they reload. They see that they were removed from the event, and they cannot rejoin this event. Chapter hosts and other people with host rights cannot be removed this way.
Important: Removal bans the person from this event and ejects every device they are using in that event, including a companion phone. Use it for disruption or safety — not for ending a speaker’s turn. To take someone off camera only, turn off Presenter mode.
Delete a chat message
Hosts and moderators can delete messages in the room chat (except when the product does not grant delete rights for that message). Attendees can delete their own messages.
- Open the menu on the message you want to delete.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm. You cannot undo this action.
Pin a chat message
Pin a message so it stays visible at the top of session chat. Pinning a new message replaces any message that is already pinned.
- Open the menu on the message you want to pin.
- Select Pin.
To remove the pin, open that message’s menu and select Unpin, or use Unpin on the pinned message at the top of chat.
Block or unblock chat for an attendee
Block stops that person from sending chat messages for the remainder of this event. You can start from a chat message or from Participants.
From chat:
- Open the menu on a message from the person.
- Select Block chat.
- Confirm.
From Participants:
- Open Participants.
- Open Actions for the person.
- Select Block chat.
- Confirm.
To restore chat, open their Actions menu in Participants and select Unblock chat.
Turn on slow mode for chat
Slow mode limits how often people can send chat messages during the session.
- Open session chat.
- Open Slow mode settings.
- Choose a duration, or turn slow mode off.
When slow mode is on, attendees see that they can send a message only every set number of seconds. More detail: Turn on slow mode in event chat.
Admit people from a webinar waiting room
If your community has the webinar waiting room enabled and the room is running with webinar features, attendees wait in a lobby until a host or moderator admits them. Hosts and moderators skip the lobby. This applies to webinar rooms on Meetup or Conference.
- Join as a host or moderator.
- In the tray, select Waiting room (the count shows how many people are waiting).
- Select Admit next to one person, Admit all for everyone currently waiting, or turn on Let everyone in so late arrivals go straight into the room.
Interactive Meetups or Conference sessions without webinar features do not use this waiting room. Full admit steps: Admit attendees from the webinar waiting room.
About automatic chat filtering
Your community’s chat moderation settings can automatically filter or remove messages that match blocked word lists (including common English profanity and selected terms in other languages). When a message is blocked this way, it may disappear as soon as it is sent. Hosts and moderators do not turn this filter on or off from inside the Bevy Virtual tray. If filtering seems wrong for your community, contact Bevy Support or your Customer Success Manager.
Tip: For Q&A moderation (approve, answer, or dismiss questions), see Manage Q&A during a virtual event.
