On your profile Updates tab, turn mailing lists on or off and set discussion notification preferences. Save each section separately. Ticket confirmations and other system emails cannot be turned off.
Whether you joined a chapter, registered for an event, or both, your signed-in profile Updates tab is where you control optional emails and (when available) discussion alerts.
Updates manages two kinds of preferences:
- Mailing lists — chapter newsletters and, when available, global or community-wide newsletters. You may have opted in when you joined a chapter or selected an email checkbox during event registration.
- Notification Settings — discussion alerts on the site and by email, when your community has discussions enabled.
| If you are… | What you usually control here | What stays the same |
|---|---|---|
| A chapter member | Each chapter’s mailing-list toggle (and global lists, if shown). Discussion Notification Settings when discussions are enabled. | You stay a member of every chapter you do not leave. Event tickets and system emails are unchanged. |
| An event attendee | Chapter or community lists you opted into (for example at registration). Discussion settings if you use forums on the site. | Your ticket and registration stay valid. Ticket confirmations, refunds, and similar system emails still arrive. |
| Both | The same Updates tab covers membership lists and any lists tied to your account from events. | Turning off email does not leave the chapter or cancel tickets. |
Note: Your community may use a different word for chapter — for example group, club, or hub. The steps are the same. Mailing lists and Notification Settings each have their own save button — saving one does not save the other.
When this page helps you
- You joined a chapter and want fewer chapter newsletters — without leaving the chapter.
- You registered for an event, opted into chapter or community email, and want to stop those newsletters.
- You belong to several chapters and want to turn some lists off and others on in one place.
- You use discussions and want fewer (or quieter) emails about replies, mentions, or forums you follow — while keeping on-site alerts, or the reverse.
- You turned a list off earlier and want to subscribe again.
If you only need to leave one newsletter from a message already in your inbox, the email footer Unsubscribe link is often fastest. See Unsubscribe from a newsletter.
Open your Updates tab
Preference changes apply only to the account you are signed in with. Use the same email address that receives the newsletters or discussion emails you want to change.
- Sign in to the community site.
- Select your photo or name in the upper-right corner to open the profile menu.
- Select Profile.
- Select the Updates tab.
For more on opening Profile, see Edit your profile settings.
Tip: If you registered for an event with one email and later signed in with a different email, you will not see those mailing lists on Updates. Sign in with the address that receives the emails, or use the Unsubscribe link in the email footer instead.
Manage chapter and newsletter emails
The first part of Updates is for chapter and newsletter mailing lists. This is where you choose which lists send you email.
At the top you may see a short summary, for example:
Member of 3 chapters. Subscribed to 2.
- Member of… — how many chapters you belong to on this account.
- Subscribed to… — how many of those chapters still have email turned on for you.
If you are not a chapter member yet, you may see You are not a member of any chapters yet. instead of a list of toggles. You can still use the email footer Unsubscribe link on newsletters you receive, and you can still use Notification Settings lower on the page when that section appears. To join a chapter first, see Join communities, chapters, and events.
When you do have chapter memberships, each row is usually one chapter (often labeled by location or title). If a chapter has more than one mailing list, each list has its own row. Some communities also show a Global newsletters section for community-wide lists.
- Find the chapter or list you want to change.
- Turn the toggle on to receive that email, or off to stop it.
- Repeat for any other chapters or global lists you want to change. Changing one list does not change the others.
- Select Save updates.
You should see a confirmation such as Your update settings have been saved. If you leave the tab without selecting Save updates, your mailing-list changes are not saved.
Note for chapter members: Turning a mailing list off stops that chapter’s newsletters for you. You remain a member, keep access to the chapter page, and can turn the list back on later. Leaving the chapter is a different action on the chapter page — not on Updates.
Tip for attendees: Opting out of newsletters does not cancel your event registration or ticket. Ticket confirmations, waitlist updates, refunds, and similar messages are system emails — they are not controlled by these toggles.
Manage discussion notification settings
When your community offers discussions, a second section titled Notification Settings (or a customized title) appears on the same Updates tab. Members and attendees who use forums share these controls: each row is a notification type with its own On site and Email settings.
For each type you can set:
- On site — whether the alert appears in the community site’s notification experience while you browse.
- Email — how often matching alerts are emailed to you (see Email frequency options below).
- Adjust On site and Email for each type you want to change. Some rows include a help icon with a short description.
- Select Save notification settings.
You should see a short confirmation such as Notification settings saved. Leaving without saving does not change discussion preferences. Saving mailing lists does not save discussion settings, and the reverse is also true.
Common notification types you may see (exact labels can vary; some rows appear only when a feature is enabled or when your role needs them):
| Notification type | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| New discussion posted | Someone posts a new discussion in a forum you follow. |
| Post replies / Comment replies | Someone replies to your post or comment. |
| Mentioned in a discussion | Someone @mentions you in a discussion or comment. |
| Post reactions | Someone reacts to your discussion or comment. |
| New discussion with a tag you follow | A new discussion uses a tag you follow (when tag following is available). |
| Approvals, rejections, removals, and similar | Moderation outcomes that apply to content you submitted (and, for some roles, review queues). |
Note: If you do not see Notification Settings, your community may not have discussions notifications enabled, or discussions may not be available on that site. Mailing-list toggles can still appear on their own.
Email frequency options
For discussion notifications, the Email control offers these choices. On-site alerts are separate — you can keep On site on and set Email to Off (or the opposite) for the same type.
| Email option | What it means |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes | Email about matching activity is sent promptly (batched about every five minutes). Useful when you want quick notice of replies or mentions. |
| Daily | Matching activity is summarized in a daily email — fewer messages than 5 minutes. |
| Weekly | Matching activity is summarized in a weekly email — lowest volume while still receiving digests. |
| Off | No email for that notification type. On-site alerts can still be on so you see activity when you visit the site. |
Defaults differ by type — for example, replies and mentions often start with near-real-time email, while high-volume types such as new discussions in forums you follow often default to Off for email. Change only the rows that matter to you, then save.
Tip: A quiet setup many people use: keep mailing lists on only for chapters you care about, set discussion Email to Daily or Off for noisy types, and leave On site on for replies and mentions so you still see them when signed in.
What you cannot turn off
Updates controls optional newsletters and discussion preferences. It does not control transactional system emails tied to your account, tickets, or security.
| Message type | Can you turn it off on Updates? |
|---|---|
| Chapter or global newsletters | Yes — toggle off and save, or use footer Unsubscribe. |
| Discussion notification emails | Yes — set Email to Off for that type and save notification settings (when the panel is available). |
| Ticket confirmations, refunds, waitlist or registration updates, and similar event messages | No — these are system emails. Your registration and ticket stay as they are; the messages still arrive when relevant. |
| Password resets, security notices, and similar account messages | No — these are system emails and are not controlled on Updates. |
For a fuller list of transactional messages, see System emails.
Important: Turning off mailing lists or discussion emails does not cancel event tickets, remove chapter membership, or delete your account. To end membership in a chapter, leave from that chapter’s page. To stop only newsletters from an email you already received, use Unsubscribe from a newsletter.
Choose the right action
| Goal | Where to go | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Stop or restart chapter / global newsletters | Profile → Updates → mailing-list toggles → Save updates, or email footer Unsubscribe | List preference changes; membership and tickets stay |
| Fewer discussion emails, keep alerts on the site | Profile → Updates → Notification Settings → set Email to Off or Daily/Weekly → Save notification settings | Only discussion notification preferences change |
| Change discussion alerts (on site or email) | Profile → Updates → Notification Settings → Save notification settings | On-site and email settings update independently per type |
| End chapter membership | Chapter page → Leave / Leave Chapter | Membership ends; that chapter’s newsletters stop |
| Cancel or change an event ticket | Your ticket / registration path for that event (not Updates) | Ticket status changes only through event ticket flows |
| Stop system emails (confirmations, refunds, password resets) | Not available | Transactional messages still arrive when relevant |
