An admin turns on Sub-chapters for a parent chapter, then sets that parent on each child chapter. A region’s chapter list leaves out a linked chapter when its parent is in the same region. The parent page lists those chapters after the Sub-chapters component is added.
An admin opens the chapter in the Chapter Dashboard and selects Settings. Turn on Sub-chapters under Status. Set Parent chapter under Lists. Select Save after the change. Private, Hidden, Active, Inactive, and Test chapter are covered in Chapter Access and Status.
Note: Sub-chapters and Parent chapter require the admin permission Change chapter status. If Sub-chapters is unavailable, or Parent chapter does not stay saved, this account does not have that permission.
Turn on Sub-chapters
- Open the chapter that should list the others.
- Under Status, turn on Sub-chapters. The helper text says the chapter displays as a group of chapters.
- Under Lists, set Parent chapter to No parent chapter.
- Select Save.
A chapter cannot be a parent and a child at the same time. If a parent is already selected, clear it before you turn Sub-chapters on. Otherwise the save is rejected.
Link a chapter to its parent
- Open the chapter that should appear under the parent.
- Under Status, turn Sub-chapters off if it is on.
- Under Lists, select the parent in Parent chapter. The list includes chapters that already have Sub-chapters on. Do not select the chapter you are editing.
- Select Save.
To unlink the chapter, set Parent chapter to No parent chapter and save.
| Chapter | Sub-chapters | Parent chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Parent | On | No parent chapter |
| Child | Off | The parent chapter |
Note: The parent page lists a linked chapter when that chapter is Active, not Hidden, and not a test chapter.
Show them on the parent page
Linked chapters do not appear on the parent page until the Sub-chapters component is on that page or on the global chapter template. Add the component and change its heading in Chapter Page Builder.
Note: On the default chapter page, the join control uses the display rule Chapter is not parent, so it stays hidden while Sub-chapters is on. To show join on a parent chapter, change that rule. See Display rules for the chapter page builder.
How a region’s chapter list groups them
- A linked chapter is left off the list when its parent is in that same region.
- If the parent is not in the region, the linked chapter is still listed.
- The chapters that remain are in alphabetical order.
Settings does not have a control for this grouping. People see the linked chapters on the parent page when the Sub-chapters component is there.
