Learn the recommended sizes, aspect ratios, formats, and maximum file weights for images you add to forum posts, comments, featured content, banners, and attachments.
Note: This article covers images in forums and discussions (posts, replies, comments, featured content, banners, and attachments). It does not cover Admin Dashboard legacy blog posts, chapter or event page banners, or profile pictures.
Where you can add images
In forums (discussions), images can appear in more than one place. Use the right upload for the job.
| Where | What it is | Who typically uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Post or comment body | Inline image inserted while writing | Anyone who can create or edit a post or comment (comments need the image editor enabled for comments) |
| Edit metadata | Featured image for search, social previews, and Featured Content cards | Authors and moderators with access to Edit metadata |
| Blog-type post banner | Header / banner image on Blog post types | Authors creating a Blog-type post where banners are available |
| Attachments | Files attached to a post (including image files) | Anyone who can post, when attachments are enabled for the community |
Requirements at a glance
| Surface | Size / aspect | Maximum file weight | Formats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inline body image | No fixed pixel requirement. Display width caps at 1800 px. Larger JPEG/PNG images are resized on upload. | GIF: 5 MB. Other formats: keep files modest for fast loading; request size is also limited by platform infrastructure (about 16 MB). | JPEG, PNG, GIF, SVG |
| Featured image | 16:9 aspect ratio for best results | 20 MB (composer limit) | Common image uploads (for example JPEG, PNG) |
| Banner (Blog-type) | Default 4:1 (may follow your community style setting) | 20 MB (composer limit) | Common image uploads (for example JPEG, PNG) |
| Attachment (image file) | No crop requirement | 10 MB per file; up to 5 attachments per post | png, jpg, jpeg, gif (plus non-image types such as PDF and Office files) |
Inline images in posts and comments
An inline image — an image inserted in the post or comment body — is added from the rich-text editor (toolbar, drag and drop, or paste, depending on your community).
- Open the composer for a new post, an edit, or a comment.
- Add your image from the editor.
- Optionally use the image editor to set alignment, display width, and a caption before you publish. See About the image editor.
Guidelines:
- Supported types include JPEG, PNG, GIF, and SVG.
- There is no required upload size in pixels. On upload, non-GIF images that are wider than 1800 pixels are resized so the longest side fits that limit.
- In the editor, display width is capped at 1800 px.
Important: Animated GIFs skip the automatic resize that other formats get. Keep each GIF under 5 MB or the upload is rejected.
Some communities allow images in comments. If you do not see an image control in the comment box, that option is not available.
Featured images (Edit metadata)
A featured image — the image used for search, social previews, and Featured Content cards — is set from Edit metadata without changing the visible post body.
- Open the post you want to update.
- Select Edit metadata.
- In Adjust featured content, upload a featured image.
- Optionally set Name (up to 70 characters) and Description (up to 250 characters), then select Save.
Use a 16:9 aspect ratio for best results. The upload field allows files up to 20 MB. Leaving the image blank falls back to other available post imagery when Bevy builds previews.
Banner images (Blog-type posts)
A banner image — the header image on Blog-type discussion posts — appears at the top of the Blog composer when that post type is available. For choosing a post type, see About choosing a post type.
- Start a Blog post (or open one for edit).
- Upload an image in the banner field at the top of the form.
- Crop or adjust if the editor offers an adjust step, then continue writing.
Tip: The default banner aspect ratio is 4:1. Your community may use a different ratio from Style settings (BANNER_POST_ASPECT_RATIO). Match the ratio you see in the upload field.
The banner upload field allows files up to 20 MB.
Image attachments
An attachment — a file attached to a post that readers can download — can be an image when attachments are enabled. Attachments are separate from inline images in the body.
- Maximum size: 10 MB per file
- Maximum count: 5 attachments per post
- Image extensions allowed: png, jpg, jpeg, gif (other allowlisted types include PDF, common Office formats, CSV, TXT, and ZIP)
Note: File attachments appear only when your community has post attachments turned on. If you do not see Attach files in the composer, ask Community HQ or your Customer Success Manager.
