Post type conversion lets an existing discussion be changed from one content type to another-for example from a discussion to a question- without losing the original thread, its replies, or its place in your community.
We’re actively building out this feature, so some functionality may not be available yet. We’re adding capabilities regularly—check back for the latest. Notice something missing or not working as expected? Contact your Bevy Customer Success Manager—your input helps us prioritize what to build next.
Post type conversion changes the content type of an existing discussion in place. Instead of deleting a thread and posting it again under a different type, the thread is reclassified and keeps everything it already had.
When a discussion is converted, it keeps the following:
- its web link, so any saved or shared links still work
- its title, first post, and every reply
- its place in the same community category
The new type applies to every post in the thread, so the whole conversation is treated as the new type — not only the first post.
Post types you can convert between
The types available depend on what your community and its categories have turned on. Where they are enabled, a discussion can be converted between these types:
- Discussion — a standard conversation thread for open, back-and-forth replies.
- Question — a thread where one reply can be marked as the accepted answer.
- Idea — a thread that members can vote on.
- Blog — an article-style post, where a category offers it.
Converting a discussion changes how it appears for everyone who views it, so it is treated as a moderation action rather than a personal setting.
What happens to type-specific content
Some content belongs to one particular type — for example, a question’s accepted answer or an idea’s votes. When a discussion is converted away from that type, this content is hidden rather than deleted.
Because it is only hidden, the content returns if the discussion is later converted back to its original type.
Tip: Conversion is reversible and safe to undo. If a thread is converted by mistake, converting it back restores the type-specific content that was hidden.
When a discussion cannot be converted
A discussion cannot always be converted. Conversion is blocked in these cases:
- The discussion is archived — restore it before converting.
- The discussion has been merged into another thread.
- The target type is not turned on for the category.
A locked discussion can still be converted. Converting a discussion to the type it already has makes no change.
