When a host has live transcription running in Bevy Virtual Meetup, attendees can turn on closed captions from the session toolbar to read along on screen.
Bevy Virtual Meetup supports live transcription and closed captions during a session. Hosts manage transcription. Attendees turn captions on or off for themselves when transcription is active.
- Live transcription — the real-time text version of what speakers say. Hosts start and stop it from the session toolbar.
- Closed captions — on-screen text you can enable to read along. Captions are available only while transcription is active.
Note: This article is for attendees. Hosts and moderators who manage transcription, finish or restart it, or download a post-event transcript should see Use transcriptions and closed captions in Bevy Virtual Meetup.
Turn on closed captions
Join the Bevy Virtual Meetup session first. Captions work only while the host has transcription active for the session.
- In the session toolbar at the bottom of the screen, select Enable captions.
- If you do not see the control, select More, then select Enable captions.
Captions appear on screen for you. Other participants choose captions for themselves.
Turn off closed captions
In the session toolbar, select Disable captions. Select More if you do not see it.
If Enable captions is missing
- Transcription may not be active yet. Ask a host or moderator to start transcription, or wait until they do. Transcription often starts when the host joins.
- You may need to open More on a smaller window to find the captions control.
- Confirm you are in an internal Bevy Virtual Meetup (not an external Zoom or other link).
Browser Live Caption (when Bevy captions are unavailable)
Use this section only when Enable captions is missing from the Bevy session toolbar. That usually means the host has not started Bevy live transcription, so Bevy closed captions are not available yet.
Some browsers include their own captioning. Google Chrome, for example, has a Live Caption accessibility setting that can show text for audio playing in that browser. Live Caption is a setting in the browser. It is not Bevy closed captions, and Bevy does not turn it on or save it.
When Bevy transcription is active, use Enable captions in the session toolbar instead of a browser setting. Bevy captions stay with the Meetup session:
- They follow the live transcription the host started.
- Each attendee can turn captions on or off for themselves.
- Hosts can later download a transcript from the event (see the host article in Related articles).
Browser Live Caption only captions audio in that browser window on your device. Other people in the session do not see your browser captions, and the text is not stored in Bevy.
If you still need on-screen text and Bevy captions are not available, you can turn on Chrome Live Caption on your computer:
- Open Google Chrome. Join the Meetup in this same Chrome window so event audio plays in Chrome.
- Select More, then Settings.
- Open Accessibility.
- Turn on Live Caption.
Captions appear in a box in the Chrome window. You can often move the box or change caption size from the caption controls. Menu names can vary by Chrome version. For current Chrome steps, see Google’s Live Caption help. Other browsers or operating systems may offer a similar accessibility setting; Bevy does not control those.
Tip: If you can, ask a host or moderator to start Bevy transcription. That restores Enable captions for everyone in the session, not only on your device.
