Install and use the Community Events (Bevy) Slack app to browse upcoming events, connect chapters to channels, RSVP or join from Slack, and get alerts when events change.
Community Events (Bevy) is a Slack app for one Bevy community (one Bevy site, for example community.example.com). A community has chapters. Each chapter is public, private, or hidden on Bevy.
The app shows events in three places:
- The App Home. Open the app in the Slack sidebar. Every workspace member sees the same shared list. A linked member also sees personal tabs.
- Channels. A channel can show chapters. Members browse with
/upcoming-events, and the app can post alerts in the channel. - Direct messages. The app DMs you when an event you follow changes.
Replies to slash commands and mentions are ephemeral: only the person who asked can see them. The app never posts a digest of events in a channel. The only channel posts are alerts (see Alerts below).
Note: This article is for the Community Events (Bevy) Slack app. It is separate from Slack webhook or notification setup articles in this section.
Who can do what
Rights come from Slack, not from Bevy roles.
| Person | Can do |
|---|---|
| Member | Browse events, link their own Bevy account, RSVP, join chapters, follow events, start a discussion. |
| Connection owner | The person who connected a community. Only this person can change what that community shows, because the app reads Bevy with their account. |
| Manager | Named in Manage by an admin or the installer. Same rights as the installer, except they cannot change the list of managers. |
| Admin | A Slack workspace admin or owner, the person who installed the app, or (Enterprise Grid) an org admin or owner. Admins and managers can connect communities, remove destinations, mute alerts, and turn attendee alerts on and off. |
- Only the connection owner can edit a community. An admin cannot edit a community someone else connected. An admin can only remove it from a destination. Edits use the owner's Bevy access; removals do not.
- The first community must come from an admin or a manager. After that, an admin can turn on Let members connect additional communities in Manage so any member can connect another community. This setting is off by default.
- Link my Bevy account is not the same as Connect. A linked account is personal. It never puts content in a channel or the App Home, even when the person who linked it organizes chapters on Bevy.
Connect a community
- Open the App Home. Select Connect your community.
- In Your community URL, enter the Bevy site (for example
community.yourbrand.com). - Optional: in Name for this community, enter a short name. The app shows this name on events when the workspace follows more than one community.
- Select Continue to Bevy. Sign in on Bevy and approve the app.
- Return to Slack. The App Home shows a setup card.
If the app says Bevy sign-in is not enabled, the community must turn on OAuth on Bevy. Ask the HQ team to contact their Bevy Customer Success Manager.
A connection alone shows nothing. On the setup card, choose one of these:
- Show all public chapters. Puts every public chapter on the App Home. New public chapters appear when they are created.
- Choose what to show… Opens the editor.
Edit what a destination shows
The editor sets what one destination shows. A destination is the App Home or one channel. Each destination has its own settings, so #uk-events can show UK chapters and #us-events can show US chapters of the same community.
Which events has two options:
- All public chapters (new ones too). Every public chapter shows. Use Leave out to exclude some. Chapters created later also appear.
- Only the chapters I pick. Only selected chapters show. New chapters do not appear.
Private and hidden chapters have a separate picker, Private and hidden chapters. They are never part of All public chapters.
If the community has more than 100 chapters, the public picker searches by name and shows the first 100 matches. If you cannot find a chapter, use + Add a chapter by URL… in Manage.
Add a chapter by URL
- In Manage, select + Add a chapter by URL… under the community.
- Paste the chapter's main page URL. It must be on the same Bevy site as the connection.
- Select Next. The editor opens with the chapter selected and no destination.
- Pick a Channel. Optional: select Also show these in the App Home.
This screen does not put a chapter on the App Home only. Put it in a channel first, then use the App Home row on the Chapters → channels page. The App Home is the widest audience: every workspace member sees it.
Pasting a chapter URL in a normal Slack message does nothing. The app does not unfurl Bevy links.
Tip: On a channel's editor, Also show these in the App Home only adds chapters to the App Home. Unticking it does not remove them. Two channels can both add to the App Home, and one must not undo the other. To remove something from the App Home, edit the App Home's own row in Manage.
Channel pickers show only public and private channels in this workspace — never DMs. A private channel appears only after you invite the app: type /invite @Community Events (Bevy) in the channel. If the app cannot post in a channel you saved, it tells you after save.
Manage
Select Manage at the bottom of the App Home. Manage shows:
- Workspace settings (admins only): Let members connect additional communities.
- Who can manage this app (admins only, not managers): the list of managers (up to 50).
- Connected communities: every community the workspace shows, and where it shows.
For a community you connected, Manage shows one Shown in line plus Chapters → channels… and + Add a chapter by URL…. For a community someone else connected, Manage shows one row per destination with the owner's name. If you can remove it, the row menu includes Remove.
Manage shows at most 12 communities and at most 10 destinations per community. If there are more, it says so.
Use the App Home tabs
| Tab | Shows | When it appears |
|---|---|---|
| My events | Events that you registered for. | You linked your Bevy account. |
| My groups | Chapters that you are a member or an organizer of (up to 40). | You linked your Bevy account. |
| Discover events | Events the workspace shows, with filters. | Always. |
| Newly added | The 20 most recently added upcoming events (no filters). | The App Home shows at least one community. |
| Discover groups | Public chapters that you can join. | The App Home shows at least one community. |
When you open the App Home again, it restores the tab and filters you used last.
Discover events
The Choose events menu selects the source:
- Just for you: Near me, My communities, My events. These need a linked account, except Near me when you have set a location.
- Shown in this workspace: All communities, or one community.
You can filter by search text, format (virtual, hybrid, in person), region, country, hub, dates, and topic. Some filters appear only when they apply (for example, region when one whole community is in view).
Each page shows 10 events. Select Details on an event to see more, RSVP, or follow the event.
of 100+. The app reads at most 100 events from each source, then merges and sorts them. If a source has more than 100 events, the total can show as Showing 1–10 of 100+. That means at least 100 — not that the list is complete. Narrow the filters to see more.
Near me
If you set a location, Near me shows events within a radius of that place. The default radius is 50 km. If nothing is found, you can widen the search to 100, 250, 500, or 1000 km.
If you have no location, Near me uses places from your own chapters. It merges chapters within about 11 km of each other, uses at most 5 places, and searches 100 km around each one.
To set a location, select Set location and enter a city or postal code. Postal codes work for the US, Canada, and the UK. The app uses your location only to find events and groups. It never posts your location.
Discover groups
This tab lists chapters you can join. The app reads them from Bevy as an anonymous visitor, so it never shows a private or hidden chapter — even when the App Home shows that chapter's events.
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (no label) | Open. Select View details, then Join. |
| Asks for an application | Select Apply to fill in the form in Slack. |
| Invite only | Open it on Bevy to learn how to get an invite. |
| You're a member | Nothing to do. |
| Application pending | An organizer has not yet answered your application. |
| Full right now | The chapter is not taking new members. |
| Not taking applications right now | No application form is open. |
If you linked your account or set a location, the list is sorted by distance. If not, it is sorted A–Z.
Group details can also list up to three public channels in this workspace where the chapter shows (Connect with fellow members in #…).
Private and hidden chapters
These rules protect people who cannot see those chapters on Bevy.
- Private: only chapter members can see it on Bevy.
- Hidden: Bevy does not list it. People reach it only through a direct link.
- Unconfirmed: the app could not check whether the chapter is public. The app treats an unconfirmed chapter as private.
The app reads a private chapter's events with the connection owner's Bevy access. When an owner puts a private chapter in a channel, everyone in that channel sees its events — including people who cannot see them on Bevy. Because of that:
- All public chapters never includes a private or hidden chapter, even when the owner is a member. Pick each private or hidden chapter in the Private and hidden chapters picker.
- When you add a private or hidden chapter, the app asks you to confirm (Are you sure?). For the App Home, it warns that everyone in this workspace will see them.
- Confirm appears only when you add a chapter, not when you re-save one you already confirmed.
- A hidden chapter shows events only if the owner organizes it.
If a public chapter later becomes private or hidden, its events can stop showing until you save again and confirm. The editor may warn: No longer public on Bevy, so this destination may not show them.
| Place | Private and hidden chapters |
|---|---|
| App Home and channel event lists | Shown only if the owner picked and confirmed them. |
| Discover groups tab | Never shown. |
/join-community | Never shown. |
| Channel change alerts | Not posted unless the owner turns them on for that channel. |
| Discussion threads | Not available. Only public events can have one. |
| Attendee alerts | Not available. Only public events can have them. |
Manage, the editor, and Chapters → channels mark chapters as private, hidden, private and hidden, or unconfirmed. The line seen through your Bevy access means events come from your account.
Show chapters in channels
In Manage, select Chapters → channels… under a community you connected. The page lists every chapter (30 rows per page) and the channels that show it. Changes save at once.
- One chapter: pick channels in that chapter's Choose channels picker.
- Every public chapter: pick a channel at the top, then select Add to every public chapter. This skips private and hidden chapters.
- Remove a channel everywhere: pick a channel, then select Remove from every chapter (confirm). This also removes private and hidden chapters.
- App Home: use the menu on the App Home (everyone) row to edit or remove it.
If a channel shows All public chapters, removing that channel from one chapter leaves that chapter out. New chapters still appear. Adding a channel to a private or hidden chapter asks for confirmation before save.
Alerts
Alerts need the community's webhook, which the app installs when an admin connects the community. If a community has no webhook, alert controls do not appear.
Personal change alerts (DM)
- Select Details on the event.
- Select Alert me to changes.
When you RSVP from Slack, the app follows the event for you. You get a DM when the start date, end date, place, or status changes. For a place change, the DM says the location changed without the address. To stop, select Stop alerts for this event in the DM, or Stop change alerts in Details. If you lose access to the event, alerts stop.
Channel alerts
When a channel shows a chapter, the app can post:
- New event: a recently published chapter event (at most 5 per channel per hour).
- This event changed: a change of date, place, or status.
The first post about an event starts a thread for that event in that channel. Later changes go into that thread and also appear in the channel.
- Public events only, by default. Everyone in the channel sees the post, so the app posts only what an anonymous visitor can see on Bevy.
- Canceled public events do not get a channel post. Bevy hides canceled events from anonymous visitors. Members who follow the event still get a DM.
- Mutes. An admin can stop alerts for some chapters on Chapters → channels under Change alerts. A mute applies to every channel in the workspace.
Channel alerts for private chapters (opt-in)
The owner can turn on alerts for a private or hidden chapter, one channel at a time. On Chapters → channels, each private or hidden row has a Change alerts in #channel checkbox per channel (off by default).
When on, the app posts only published and canceled events for that chapter, and only when the owner's account can read the event. Removing the channel from the chapter removes the opt-in.
Discussion threads
In a channel, Details for a public event can show Discuss in this channel. Select it to start one thread for the event in that channel. If a thread already exists, Details shows Open the discussion. Each event has at most one thread per channel. Later change alerts go into the same thread.
Discussions are not available on the App Home, for private events, or in a channel where an admin muted the chapter.
Attendee alerts
An alert card in a channel can include Attendee alerts. When on, the app posts in the event's thread when new people RSVP (for example, 2 new attendees · 31 going).
- The app posts counts only, never names.
- Only public events can have attendee alerts.
- Only the connection owner or an admin can turn them on or off.
Slash commands and mentions
These answer only you, in the channel where you type them. They show only what that channel shows.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/upcoming-events [search] | Lists upcoming events for chapters the channel shows (10 per page). |
/join-community | Lists public chapters the channel shows so you can join one. |
@Community Events (Bevy) [search] | Same as /upcoming-events. |
If the channel shows nothing, the reply tells you to use Manage in the app.
Link my Bevy account
You do not have to link a Bevy account. Linking connects your own Bevy account to your Slack user. It does not change what other people see, and it never puts content in a channel or the App Home.
To link, select Link my Bevy account at the bottom of the App Home, or select a button that needs your account (such as RSVP or Join). The app asks you to link first, then returns you to the same event after you sign in.
Without a linked account
- You see events the workspace shows, on the App Home and in channels.
- You can open Details, follow events (DM alerts), and start discussions.
- You can browse Discover groups (A–Z, or by distance after you set a location).
- You can use Near me after you set a location.
- To RSVP or join, you continue on Bevy.
With a linked account
| Feature | What you get |
|---|---|
| My events tab | Your registrations. |
| My groups tab | Your chapters, as member or organizer. |
| My communities source | Events from your own chapters, including private chapters you belong to. Other members do not see these. |
| Near me without a location | Events near your own chapters. |
| RSVP in Slack | Register for free (RSVP-only) events from Details. Slack shows the form when the event asks questions. The app also follows the event for you. |
| Join and Apply in Slack | Join an open chapter, or send an application, from Discover groups or after an RSVP. |
| Member marks | You're a member and Application pending in Discover groups. |
| Sort by distance | Discover groups sorts by your chapters' places. |
The app always registers you with your own account. It never uses the connection owner's account. For a ticketed event, or a form Slack cannot show, the app sends you to Bevy.
Important: A community can limit who may approve apps on Bevy. If you are refused access on Bevy, ask your community administrator. A community must also enable RSVP from Slack; otherwise the app says the community has not enabled RSVP from Slack yet and sends you to Bevy. If your link is older than the RSVP feature, the app may ask you to re-authorize for one new permission.
