Viewers can browse content but cannot post, reply, or interact.
These permissions are tied to user roles and their relationship with the chapter, category, or event.
Moderation
How do I moderate Discussions?
- Click your profile image
- Select Discussion moderation
- Use the Approved, Flagged, Pending, and Banned tabs to review and manage posts
How does post approval work?
- Users with the can_post_without_approval permission can post without moderation
- Users with new accounts (under 1 hour old) may have their posts held for review
- If a user doesn't meet the account age threshold or has no prior approved posts, their post may require manual approval
Contact Support if you are unsure of what your post approval permissions are
Can banned users edit their posts?
Yes. Banned users can still edit their own posts. This allows them to update or correct their content, potentially leading to reinstatement.
Can I pin posts?
- Moderators: Can pin posts within their assigned categories
- Admins: Can pin posts across the platform, including to the homepage
What are the moderation capabilities by role?
- Chapter Organizers: Moderate within their chapter; cannot ban globally
- HQ Admins: Full moderation capabilities, including global bans
How it's structured
If an Admin, Moderator or Volunteer has access to Technical Discussions, they'll have access to Electronics and Software Engineering and all sub-categories below.
Note: The original document included an image showing the category structure hierarchy. For accessibility, consider including a text-based description of this hierarchy.
Permissions and roles
Why am I seeing categories I'm not assigned to?
You may have inherited permissions from a parent category. Reach out to your admin or support if this seems incorrect.
How do I assign or update moderation roles?
- Navigate to the category
- Click Edit
- In the Team section, add or remove users based on their role
Note: Moderators can only assign roles up to their own permission level.
Visibility settings
What's the difference between hidden and private categories?
- Hidden: Only visible to invited users or users with a direct link
- Private: Visible to chapter members or event attendees
What happens if I remove someone from a private or hidden category?
They'll lose access immediately. If they attended a related event, they may still access event-specific discussions.
Feature availability
Is the AI Copilot Writer available?
- Enterprise Discussions: AI Copilot is currently not supported
- Bevy Discussions (Chapter/Event pages): Includes editing tools like rephrase and shorten
Is AI summarization available?
Yes. AI-generated summaries are available for posts that exceed 500 words.
- Summaries include the original post and all replies
- User attribution for AI summaries is planned but not yet available
Are there integrations or APIs for Discussions?
Currently, there are no public APIs available for Bevy Discussions.
Advanced moderation logic
How does posting approval work behind the scenes?
The BEVY_DISCUSSIONS_REQUIRED_ACCOUNT_AGE_TO_SKIP_MANUAL_MODERATION setting controls post auto-approval. By default:
- Account age threshold = 1 hour
- If the setting is enabled and the user has no approved posts, the system holds their post for manual review
Some organizations configure stricter moderation—contact support to check your setup.
Who can post without approval?
Users with can_post_without_approval are usually assigned that via:
- Category Team
- Chapter Team
- Admin, Moderator, or Volunteer roles
