This document will guide you through the new Private Groups access settings that allow you to control how users can join, discover, and engage with your community.
Access settings
The Private Groups setting is only accessible via the New Dashboard under Settings
- Private: The group's events and discussions are only accessible to approved members. Non-members cannot access a private group's events and discussions.
- Hidden: The group page will not be discoverable through searches. Users can only access it via a direct link.
How It Works
Setting Access Type
- When creating or editing a chapter, select Private under the "Access" section.
- Once set to private, only members will have access to the chapter's content.
Once enabled as a private group, that group cannot be changed to Public in the future. This restriction is in place to maintain the confidentiality and exclusivity of the group's content and discussions. When a chapter is designated as private, only approved members can access its events and discussions, and non-members cannot discover it through searches. Once a chapter is configured as private, it is locked in that status to protect the privacy of its members and the information shared within the group.
Changing Visibility of Group Page
- Select the Hidden checkbox to remove the group page from searches and group listings
- Users (members AND non-members) can still access the group page via a direct URL link.
- Only members can access the private group's event pages
Adding members
Non-members cannot join Private Groups and must be added to the group membership by an admin or that group's organizers.
- Admins or group leaders need to manually add individual members or upload members via a CSV to the group.
- Super Admins may add members via API - see more docs on this here
