This article outlines the best practices for presenters and steps to configure your computer to make it easier to share a slideshow when you only have one monitor in Bevy Virtual Meetup
Preparation
- To ensure that all speakers display properly in the event and in the recording, cameras should be set to landscape orientation. If you have a speaker using their smart phone or tablet camera, the device should be placed in landscape position, not portrait, to avoid cutting off the speaker in the recording. Bevy's default video display is landscape.
-
Use an updated Chrome browser.
-
Invest in lighting like a small ring light ($15-20) for better visibility.
-
Wear solid colors to avoid distracting patterns on the screen.
-
Appoint a chat moderator before your session.
-
Communicate with moderators about handling audience questions (interrupting or waiting until the end).
-
If using the Q&A feature, coordinate with the host/moderator about timing, ideally opening it after introductions, and announce it to the audience during the session.
-
During your session
-
Join the session event 15 minutes early to test your audio and video. To learn more, see Troubleshooting steps for presenters.
-
Place slides or notes below the camera to maintain eye contact with the lens, enhancing 1-1 connection with the audience.
-
Slow down your speech and pause between sentences, as voice reception online differs from in-person communication.
-
Use visible hand gestures as nonverbal cues, as they serve as trust indicators and enhance communication.
-
If using pre-recorded content, utilize chat to engage attendees. Q&A and pin chat features can facilitate conversation. To learn more, see chat tips.
Configure your macOS with single monitor
When you are presenting in Bevy Virtual Meetup using Google Chrome, sometimes the slides you're sharing look really small.
This happens when you only share a single tab, instead of a window. But, because your Bevy event is in your browser window, you still need to be able to see the event and do things like answer questions or mute yourself.
However, we've found that updating your gesture settings, and then sharing an entire window makes it easy to share your screen and present your slides while still being able to access the event.
We recommend trying the following:
- In your System Preferences >Trackpad > More Gestures, select the checkbox to Swipe between full-screen apps.
- Open your slides, or whatever you're presenting, in a new browser window.
- Share your screen in Bevy, and choose that window to share.
- When you start your presentation, swipe between screens.
When you swipe between screens, the event attendees only see what you're sharing, and the slides display the right size.
